This notion is now fading. The "back-office" function - the reception of an order and its processing - is more and more sophisticated and its actors claim their part in the efficient operation of capital markets.

This sophistication is not only due to the diversity of financial assets processed but also to the volumes that have been reached. Banking institutions see these securities reserves as real war chests and as a new source of profit by developing services such as conservation, depositary or securities lending and borrowing, all brought together under the notion of "securities services business line".
